Erik Ten Hag boldly arrived in Manchester claiming eras come to an end and Manchester City could be his final derby
Erik Ten Hag's popularity with Manchester City fans continues to soar after Manchester United nearly self-destructed in their FA Cup semi-final.
Apart from Antony cupping his ears to the Coventry players and Rasmus Hojlund celebrating emphatically in front of his own fans, the United players were much more reserved at the final whistle as they recognised the shambles that had so nearly caused them to be dumped out of the competition in comical fashion. The laughs would certainly have been loudest at the Etihad.
Including last year's final, City have now won the last three derbies and they have dominated United in the league this season - both when they have played and over the course of the campaign generally, sitting 23 points ahead with six games to go - yet Ten Hag has repeatedly failed to acknowledge that there is much of a gap between the teams.
United showed signs of progress in their first year under Ten Hag, and the former Ajax coach boldly announced on taking the job that "eras come to an end". While Liverpool have only won a league cup since then, they could yet win the Premier League before Jurgen Klopp leaves in summer having already played a full part in the title race.
