Authorities have arrested a man they say fired a bullet that grazed a West Orange police officer on Monday.

An East Orange man has been charged with attempted murder after he allegedly shot an off-duty West Orange police officer during a scuffle at a convenience store on Monday, authorities said. Shaahid Forshee, 36, was arrested in Newark Monday night, hours after he allegedly shot a 27-year-old police officer at a convenience store on South Valley Road in West Orange. The officer, who was unarmed, attempted to break up a fight between Forshee and another man and narrowly escaped serious injury when a bullet grazed his head, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said.
The officer, who was not identified, was taken to University Hospital in Newark, where he was listed in stable condition, the prosecutor’s office said. Forshee and the other man fled the scene. Forshee was apprehended on Monday night and charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, and weapons possession. He is being held in the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark pending his first court appearance scheduled for Tuesday.
