The accused faces several charges
The alleged incident took place on Alexander Road in the east of the city close to a police station.
The alert started in the Alexander Road area after a report of a one-vehicle road traffic collision on Monday morning.Cordons had been put in place and a number of homes evacuated, with road closures in place between Orangefield Crescent and Ladas Drive, and at Bellsbridge Roundabout on the Cregagh Road.
A statement from the PSNI last night said: "A 49-year-old man has been charged with a number of offences following a security alert in the Alexander Road area of East Belfast today, Monday May 1. "He has been charged with attempted criminal damage, criminal damage, driving without due care and attention, failing to provide a specimen while driving unfit and possessing an offensive weapon in a public place."As is usual procedure the charge will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service."For all the latest news, visit the Belfast Live homepagehere and sign up to our daily newsletter here.
