A man was arrested on Thursday, February 13, 2025, for allegedly attempting to kidnap a 13-year-old boy in Phoenix. Community members witnessed the suspect following the child into a residential property and alerted Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA). According to RUSA, the suspect had been trailing the boy from a school. The 13-year-old took a shortcut and noticed a man carrying a knife following him.
Realizing the suspect was getting closer, he decided to walk past his home and quickly ran into the house of an unknown man, with the suspect in close pursuit. The suspect, upon entering the house, was assaulted by the homeowner, sustaining head injuries from a steel lock and a broken bottle. He was subsequently arrested and charged with house robbery. It remains unclear if charges of attempted kidnapping were added.\In a separate incident, a man appeared at the East London Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, facing charges of allegedly kidnapping 9-year-old Emman Ghunman outside Dreamland Primary School in Buffalo Flats, East London, on February 4, 2025. Eastern Cape Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane praised the Hawks for their thorough investigation into the kidnapping. He expressed gratitude for the progress made in the case and commended the Hawks for their dedication and perseverance in bringing the perpetrator to justice. \Calvin Rafadi, a crime expert and research associate at the University of Johannesburg, suggested that many recent kidnapping cases appear to be linked to ransom demands. Statistics from December 2024 indicated that 561 kidnappings were linked to ransom demands, while 93 other kidnapping cases were associated with extortion.
