Manuel Mata, 42, was taken into custody Friday by sheriff’s deputies after defense lawyers tried to have him sworn in as a witness. Mata refused to take the oath.
after they deliberated seven and a half hours over the sentence for Dean, who was convicted of manslaughter for the 2019 killing of Atatiana Jefferson, 28. The jury rejected a murder charge, which could have led to a life sentence. Dean faces two to 20 years in prison but is Defense lawyers noted that Jefferson’s siblings, who have attended most of the trial, were not among the group that accosted the Dean family.
