Dean Hughes appeared before a judge

A man has appeared before a judge after being charged with murder following an incident nearly four years ago. Dean Hughes, 46, was charged with the murder of Shane Maloney after police were called to a 'disturbance' in Leigh.

Mr Maloney was assaulted in November 2019 and died 15 months later. Hughes appeared at Manchester Crown Court on Monday morning for a preliminary hearing. He was not asked to enter a plea, and the case was adjourned for a further hearing to be held next month. A trial date was not set. You will continue to be remained in custody.

A police statement issued previously said: "At around 7pm on 8 November 2019, Greater Manchester Police responded to reports of a disturbance at an address on Wigan Road in Leigh. Shane sadly passed away in March 2021, 15 months after the incident."
