, with a hammer pleaded not guilty to multiple charges during his first appearance in San Francisco County Superior Court on Tuesday afternoon.
Police say David DePape, 42, broke into the Pelosis’ San Francisco home on Broadway near Divisadero on Friday morning with the intention of taking Nancy Pelosi hostage. Instead, authorities say, he found Paul Pelosi home alone and struck the 82-year-old in the head with a hammer he had brought as the two were struggling for control of the weapon.
During a Monday press conference, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said the charges DePape is facing include attempted murder, residential burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, false imprisonment of an elder and threats to a public official’s family. Police say DePape had intended to restrain Paul Pelosi with zip ties he brought before police arrived and arrested DePape. Police also say DePape had originally planned to break the speaker’s kneecaps with a hammer if she refused to tell him the “truth” during an interrogation about Democratic “lies.”
DePape reportedly said he was on a “suicide mission” and had plans to target other California and federal politicians, according to a Tuesday court filing.
