The slaughter is alleged to have been carried out by members of the Dogon ethnic group -- a hunting and farming community with a long history of tension with the nomadic Fulani over access to land.
The demonstrators were also protesting against what they described as President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita's failure to stop the attacks.
"My Fulani brothers, revenge is not the solution; my Dogon brothers, you must lay down your weapons," influential imam Mahmoud Dicko, who presides over the Islamic High Council , told the crowd. "Our children, our husbands and our parents are dying because of the bad government of IBK and his clan," Mariam Fomba, the widow of a soldier, told AFP.Police later dispersed the demonstrators with tear gas when the protest began to head for the home of Prime Minister Soumeylou Boubeye Maiga, burning tyres and throwing stones at officers.
Mali has been struggling to return to stability since Islamist extremists took control of the country's north in early 2012, prompting a military intervention by France.
