PUTRAJAYA – Malaysia Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is exploring how to boost wages for workers, as gloomy economic prospects pose headwinds to his fledgling administration.

How Malaysia handles an increasingly challenging economic outlook could be key for Mr Anwar’s survival amid looming tests to his staying power. His three-month-old unity government is set to face six state elections later this year. Meanwhile, prices continue to climb, with the central bank expecting inflation to remain elevated in 2023. This even as the average salaries and wages in Malaysia are considered low, according to the Finance Ministry in its Economic Outlook 2023 report. Wages have grown at an average increment of about RM140 a year between 2010 and 2019, the ministry said.
