Malaysia central bank maintains key rate at 3.00%

KUALA LUMPUR :Malaysia's central bank kept benchmark interest rates unchanged on Thursday, as expected, amid signs of moderating growth and easing inflation, with economists saying it will likely stay on hold for the rest of the year.

The central bank said its"monetary policy stance is slightly accommodative and remains supportive of the economy" at the current interest rate. BNM has forecast headline inflation to average between 2.8 per cent to 3.8 per cent in 2023, compared with 3.3 per cent last year. Economic growth is expected to moderate to 4 per cent to 5 per cent this year.

"We see the biggest risk of more hikes stemming from a weak ringgit, which should remain under pressure," Holmes said.
