Malawi: More Pain, More Gnawing Teeth As the Cost of Living Rises By 3 Percent in Major Cities, Town

Malawians living in major cities and towns will still have to dig deeper into their pockets to earn a living as the cost of living-- the amount of money needed to maintain a certain standard of life--has again rose by 3.9 percent in the first half of 2024.

According to figures from the Centre for Social Concern , the cost of living was recorded at an average of K510, 634 in June from K491, 037 recorded in January 2024.

However, the average cost of living has moderated by 2.4 percentage points when compared to a 6.3 percent jump recorded in the first half of 2023. Furthermore, the report says the price of tomatoes also saw a notable increase, with Lilongwe experiencing a rise of 15.75 percent, the highest in the country, whereas Blantyre reported a decrease of 3 percent in tomato prices, highlighting a disparity in regional price changes.There was a problem processing your submission. Economist Marvin Banda said the cost of living remains, in most instances, unattainable for regular Malawians.
