On Friday, Malawian President Peter Mutharika declared a state of emergency in the areas hit hardest.
The number of people killed and the damage caused to homes and properties in Malawi following the recent floods is expected to rise, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs .
Guterres added that he was deeply saddened by the loss of life as UN assessment teams try to reach those affected in new areas with more than 80% of the country’s hydro-electricity capacity down, seriously impacting the power supply.
