South Africa's Social Development Minister Sisisi Tolashe has called for the involvement of the SSA and SIU to investigate a significant SRD grant fraud. The fraud involved extensive use of stolen identity numbers to fraudulently obtain SRD grants, affecting thousands of individuals. The investigation, initiated by Cedras and Gosai, revealed a suspiciously high application rate of 91% among those born in February 2005.
After an internal investigation, Social Development Minister Sisisi Tolashe revealed that the SSA and SIU need to be involved to investigate the extensive SRD grant fraud. The fraud was initially discovered by Cedras and Gosai, who found that they and several friends had been fraudulently registered to receive SRD grants. The fraudsters used stolen identity numbers to apply for the SRD grant and receive the funds in bank accounts registered under stolen IDs.
