Major Power Outage Plunges Bustling Swath of Manhattan Into Darkness

The outage affected more than 62,000 customers, according to electric company Con Edison

A swath of Manhattan lost power Saturday night due to a transformer fire, officials said, plunging subway stations, stores and parts of Times Square into darkness.

The outage affected 62,954 customers, according to electric company Con Edison. The blackout extended from roughly Fifth Avenue to the Hudson River, and from the West 40s to 72nd Street, according to the Fire Department of New York. On Saturday evening, the department said it had responded to a transformer fire at West 64th Street and West End Avenue.
