Qatar Airways is said to be investing in a privately owned South African airline, Airlink, according to the latest media reports.
Earlier this year Qatar Airways said it intended to invest in an airline located in the southern part of Africa.
Chief executive officer at Qatar Airways, Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, said in May that his airline was in the final stage of talks regarding investing in an airline in southern Africa.There was speculation that Qatar Airways would enter a partnership with South African Airways, as South Africa’s national carrier announced it had terminated the equity partnership it was said to be entering with the Takatso Consortium.
South African Airways later announced that it was not intent on entering an agreement with Qatar Airways. It seeks an investor that will indeed enable it to carry out itsDaily Investor reports that Qatar Airways is in talks to buy a stake in South Africa’s Airlink. The Doha-based airline seeks to expand its presence on the African continent.
Southern Africa is the “last piece of the equation” to gain greater scale on the continent that is seeing rising travel demand, Al-Meer said in May.The carrier is reportedly considering taking a 20% stake in Airlink. However, this is not yet confirmed and sources have asked not to be identified because the companies have yet to reach an agreement.states that Qatar Airways is reportedly in the final stages of taking a 49% stake in Rwanda’s national airline, RwandAir.
