Several major firms are refusing to vote in a crucial meeting deciding the fate of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) after a series of sexual assault allegations gracegausden93 reports

However, Ms Newton-Smith said she was “absolutely determined that we lead this programme of change” so the CBI could be a “collective voice for business”.

The CBI is one of the UK’s most prominent lobby groups. Its purpose is speak to the Government on behalf of around 190,000 businesses, which employ millions of people. It suffered a fall from grace after allegations of harassment and sexual assault emerged in April including two allegations of rape, one at a summer party held by the group in 2019, another at one of its overseas offices, which the City of London Police is currently investigating.

The CBI suspended its own day-to-day operations due to the allegations and will only resume work if members back its plans for change. The UK government also suspended engagement with the CBI in April with Jeremy Hunt saying at a business event that month there was “no point” in talking to the CBI while it is dealing with the allegations.Topics
