Eskom’s coal power fleet has reached an EAF last recorded in August 2022.
Eskom has improved its coal power station fleet’s weekly energy availability factor to 60% for the first time in more than a year.
Shumagam said that the improvement has helped Eskom reduce its open-cycle gas turbine usage, which was good news for the utility’s budget.Gourikwa open-cycle gas turbine power station Shumagam added that the OCGTs will nonetheless continue to be required for some evening and early morning peak periods.in the week before last, when it had already climbed to 58.83%.
At the same time in 2022, the EAF for the calendar year was 59.18%. In 2021, it was around 62% by Week 41. The fleet’s performance will have to be substantially better over the next five months than it has been over the same period in the past few years if there is any hope of achieving this. Together with Unit 2, the units had been offline for nearly a year due to the collapse of a flue-gas duct in October 2022.
