has reiterated his party’s stance that compensation must take place in land redistribution, even in cases where land was historically stolen from the original inhabitants.Responding to a caller’s question on whether land will be redistributed, Maimane said: “Absolutely. Where the DA governs, we’ve already accelerated the delivery of titles back to South Africans, over 100,000 already in the Western Cape. Here in Joburg over 6,000, it’s one of the things that we’ve become deliberate on.
“Thirdly, in terms of restitution, we are of the complete view that we don’t need an amendment of the Constitution. Expropriation without compensation already happens in our country, it just happens to black South Africans who don’t have title [deeds]. Therefore, if we give titles to citizens, we can ensure that they can be able to be just and equitably compensated as what Section 25 of the Constitution says.
