The registration points will be open to communities across all eight municipalities in the province as government aims to create a database of all spaza shops.

JOHANNESBURG - Seventy registration points have been established across Gauteng for spaza shop operators to register their businesses.

This follows a series of foodborne illness and contamination incidents across the country that have claimed the lives of 22 children.During a media briefing in Joburg on Tuesday afternoon, MEC for Finance and Economic Development Lebogang Maile outlined the requirements that spaza shop operators will need when registering their business.

"These include a correctly filled-in application form that provides personal and business details; a certified and valid copy of a South African ID; proof of residence; business registration with the CIPC; proof of ownership or permission to utilise business premises; zoning certificate and consent use or special consent use or comment from municipal city planning; certificate of acceptability or comment from environmental health supporting the application; and the municipality determined...
