Belle San Miguel Ortiz — better known as the Madre of Mariachi — brought mariachi education into public schools and colleges. She passed away at the age of 90, but her wisdom lives on with her son Roland San Miguel.
SAN ANTONIO — When Roland San Miguel sets foot inside the Mariachi Bar in San Antonio, he’s reminded of how far his culture has progressed.He was raised by legendary mariachi Juan Ortiz, whose“This is cool, very cool,” he said, smiling.
The Madre of Mariachi’s last interview was with Spectrum News 1 in late February, where she spoke about this time.“Los Tejanitos, the dance group and the singing, and the guitars. I brought in stuff and you should have seen them,” San Miguel Ortiz said. “When I first got to San Antonio, the first person I met was Belle Ortiz,” Garcia said. “She always would call everyone darling, she would say, ‘Darling, I just know, I can feel it, you just are going to be great... Go get ’em.’”
