The search was in connection with the disappearance of five-year-old Inga Gehricke, known in the German media as “the German Maddie”. The police last week confirmed the 43-year-old had been ruled out as a suspect.
The details came as police in Frankfurt confirmed they had reopened the murder case of another German child. Yesterday, a row erupted after a German prosecutor said he had written to the McCanns to apologise for not being more transparent about the investigation. He added: “We have really considered the fact that it is going to be very hard for the family when we tell them that we assume Madeleine is dead. But we can’t say why she is dead.”
