All the amazing vehicles in MadMaxFuryRoad? Yeah, they had to ship those overseas 👀 'We had 140 cars that were made in Australia and they had to ship— they put them all on a boat and sailed them on the water all the way to Namibia.' 😱
Mad Max: Fury Road star Charlize Theron reveals that the film shoot required an astounding number of cars to be shipped overseas. Released in 2015, Mad Max: Fury Road is directed by original Mad Max director George Miller, introducing a new iteration of the character played by Tom Hardy. The film sees Max joining forces with Theron's Furiosa in order to escape the wrath of a tyrannical ruler in a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In a recent interview on the SmartLess podcast, with hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett, Charlize Theron reveals that achieving Mad Max: Fury Road's impressive vehicle sequences involved shipping 140 cars overseas. While production was initially going to take place primarily in Australia, a surprise monsoon meant that filming was moved to Namibia, with all the modified cars having to move as well.
“The desert is unbelievable. We went there because there was a flood. There was like a rain monsoon that hit Australia right as we were in preproduction and the whole Red Desert in Australia just ended up being wildflowers. We had 140 cars that were made in Australia and they had to ship— they put them all on a boat and sailed them on the water all the way to Namibia.
Since Furiosa is a prequel, actor Anya Taylor-Joy is taking on the titular role this time around instead of Theron, with Chris Hemsworth playing the film's central villain. Set photos have already revealed a sneak peek at both Taylor-Joy's and Hemsworth's characters, with the latter sporting a prosthetic nose and appearing almost unrecognizable.
It remains to be seen whether Furiosa will be as positively received as Mad Max: Fury Road, but the latter movie was something of a surprise hit, managing, in many ways, to surpass the original trilogy of movies. While Furiosa has a release date set for 2024, it's still up in the air in terms of whether Theron and Hardy will ever reprise their roles for a future Mad Max film.
