Open source has become a cornerstone of modern software development due to its transparency and collaborative benefits. However, alongside these benefits
comes a growing risk:Incidents involving hardcoded API keys, residual personal data in test environments, and vulnerabilities embedded in dependency chains have shown that open source can become inadvertent carriers of sensitive information leaks. These leaks, in turn, can lead to unauthorized access, data breaches, regulatory violations, and downstream contamination of countless dependent applications., drawing patterns from high-profile open-source security incidents.
Case in point: In 2022, Uber was fined $64 million for a former employee’s retention of user mobile phone numbers and geo-location data in a GitHub open-source project , which constituted a severe privacy breach. In the case of transitive dependency vulnerabilities , detection becomes even more difficult.
