After years of drinking skimmed conservatism, Conservatives have now opted for a full\u002Dfat version in the form of Pierre Poilievre, their new leader.
In the end, it wasn’t even close. Poilievre drilled former Quebec premier Jean Charest by a margin of 68 per cent to 16 per cent, a beating which ought to give pause to those who thought tinkering on the margins of Erin O’Toole would be enough to slip past Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The message? The party membership wants to win the next election its way, not the media’s or anybody else’s, or die trying.
“Tonight begins the journey to replace an old government that costs you more and delivers you less, with a new government that puts you first, your paycheque, your retirement, your home, your country,” Poilievre told the crowd gathered to witness his ascension. Will the message land? Well, Poilievre won his 68 per cent vote share from a pool of nearly 418,000 voters, many of whom were not members before the leadership race kicked off months ago. The Poilievre campaign was relentless in signing up new converts; that relentlessness needs to carry over into the much larger voter pool Poilievre now has to swim in, one with much stronger predators.
