As surprises go, Stephen Harper’s support for Poilievre shouldn’t register on the Richter scale. The news would have been if he hadn’t endorsed Skippy.
Like Christians pondering what their man Jesus would do when faced with challenges, frustrated Conservatives often wonder what their political god would do faced with current circumstances. How would Harper have handled the “Freedom Convoy”? What would he do to unseat Justin Trudeau? How would he handle all of the “wokery”? Did he like the new Top Gun?
As surprises go, Harper’s support for Poilievre shouldn’t register on the Richter scale. After all, he made Poilievre his parliamentary secretary after the 2008 election and made him a minister in 2013. The news would have been if heAnd then there’s Jean Charest. Despite Harper’s reference to a “strong field” in his endorsement of Poilievre, there is no way the “strong” in that field had anything to do with the former Quebec premier.
Which isn’t to say you can’t have reasons for being concerned; I’m no fan of Poilievre’s convoy footsie, either. But I’m also a firm believer in the fact there is a structural problem in the modern market economy and it’s the people who do well out of that modern market economy who dominate most of the decision-making and discourse in the country. More importantly, they’re often the ones who heap scorn on those who don’t share their same level of achievement, attitude, or worldview.
