Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane has called for a mandatory vaccine amid the increasing Covid-19 active cases in the province. | City_Press
Addressing a media briefing at the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in Mthatha on Tuesday, Mabuyane said the call was necessitated by a recent surge in active cases and the discovery of the Omicron variant.Mabuyane wished President Cyril Ramaphosa – who contracted the virus last week – a speedy recovery. “We want him to be fully healthy soon to continue to lead the fight against the pandemic and our economic recovery efforts,” he said.
The biggest concern regarding the spread of the Omicron variant, said Mabuyane, was the number of unvaccinated people in the province and the country. “Our scientists are still studying the Omicron variant. The vaccination programme will now be decentralised and localised to joint operation centres led by mayors and speakers, including traditional leaders, businesses and civil society.
Every sub-district will be supported to vaccinate 1 000 people a day and will be provided with outreach teams to conduct community vaccinations.
