Luyanda Botha, serving a life sentence for the rape and murder of Uyinene Mrwetyana, appeared in court facing an attempted rape charge from 2014. He pleaded not guilty to the charge, which alleges he assaulted a nursing student at an Athlone nursing college campus. Botha's previous application to have the case dismissed was denied, and charges were reinstated following his conviction for Mrwetyana's murder.

Luyanda Botha , serving a life sentence for the rape and murder of University of Cape Town ( UCT ) student Uyinene Mrwetyana , appeared in the Wynberg Regional Court on Friday facing an attempted rape charge dating back to 2014. Botha, dressed in a bright orange T-shirt, briefly appeared in court where the matter was postponed due to the presiding magistrate's unavailability. The case was originally scheduled to be heard today but had to be adjourned.

Botha pleaded not guilty to the attempted rape charge, which alleges that he assaulted a nursing student at an Athlone nursing college campus in 2014. Previously, Botha attempted to have the case removed from the court roll but his Section 174 application was denied by Magistrate Anthea Ramos. Magistrate Ramos stated that she did not believe there was no evidence against Botha. The state alleges that Botha visited a woman at an institution and encountered the victim, who was taking a bath at the time. He allegedly attempted to rape her but she managed to fight him off. He was subsequently arrested.Botha, however, maintains his innocence. During court proceedings, he claimed that on the day of the alleged incident, he visited his then-girlfriend at the campus and gained access after security personnel let him enter without proper protocol. He stated that he searched for his girlfriend and entered the student shower area where he encountered the complainant. According to Botha, when she saw him, she screamed, and he fled the scene. Botha vehemently denied assaulting the complainant. Charges against Botha were reinstated following his conviction and sentencing for Mrwetyana's murder and rape. He had made sexual advances toward Mrwetyana before raping her and locking her in a post office safe where she was bludgeoned to death with a blunt object. Botha's conviction judgment for the Mrwetyana case will be heard on Monday in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court.
