A resident, Nophumzile Bhunge says they want increased police visibility in rural areas
Residents of Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape are calling for the deployment of more police to the area. This follows the death of 18 people, who were gunned down at Ngobozana Village last Saturday.
According to the latest provincial crime statistics, Lusikisiki is in the top five of hotspots for violence and rape cases. Many young people are scared to express their views for fear of victimisation.“These criminals come to our houses and take us to banks to withdraw money and give them. We are asking government to deploy police officers so that we can be safe. We are asking for police vehicles and for police to answer our calls at the police station. We are pleading with police to work.
“What happens here is that women and children get raped, we get murdered. We are asking government to deploy soldiers in Lusikisiki because crime is high here. We are scared to sleep at night, criminals come to our houses and do as they please with us.” “I’ve been to court many times on a case that started last year, they keep on postponing it. This after my eight-year-old child was raped. I am worried because cases disappear in this court. There was an incident of a grade 12 learner that was murdered in my village, no one was arrested. We are calling on government to remove police that are from here and bring police from other provinces then we can see change.
