Luke Skywalker's lightsaber included a bifurcating cyclical-ignition pulse that allowed it to ignite underwater. Rare before Palpatine's rise, the mechanism became standard once Luke's new Jedi Order was established in Legends canon.
Luke Skywalker changed the Jedi in many ways in Star Wars Legends, including how they built their iconic lightsabers. Unlike his current canon counterpart, the Luke Skywalker of the now-bygone Legends continuity continued his original trilogy character trajectory, improving Jedi philosophy and growing as a person rather than remaining stagnant.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In the 102nd issue of Marvel’s classic Star Wars series, by Mary Jo Duffy and Sal Buscema, Luke Skywalker is shown using his lightsaber and lending Lando Calrissian his shoto , with both weapons functioning normally underwater. In Legends lore, lightsabers normally cannot be used underwater, as their blades immediately deactivate.
Luke Skywalker’s iconic green-bladed lightsaber would go on to influence the lightsaber designs of all future Jedi Knights. As revealed in the Star Wars: Young Jedi Knights books, waterproof lightsabers became the norm in the New Jedi Order, making the issue of lightsabers shorting out when submerged largely a thing of the past. Just as Luke Skywalker improved Jedi philosophies, he also popularized an improved lightsaber design.
Luke’s lightsaber also uses a synthetic lightsaber crystal, something normally frowned on by previous generations of Jedi. Synthetic crystals are typically created using the dark side, but a Jedi can, in an emergency, synthesize one using the “good side” instead. Since the Empire destroyed most of the galaxy’s natural lightsaber crystal sources, synth-crystals became the norm in Luke’s New Jedi Order out of necessity.
