Lucas Cormier and Zakariya Karim are both getting an opportunity to play for the Ottawa Redblacks. It\u0027s a very different path for both.

An 11 1/2-hour drive away from home, Cormier will get paid to do what he likes to do on a football field: Be physical. Hit people. He’s from a football family. His parents Tim and Stacy have been heavily involved with the Sackville Minor Football Association.

His physicality jumped out to the Redblacks, who like his toughness, his speed and his tackling ability.Article content “I grew a lot in those four years in a bit of a different way,” he said. “In terms of maturity and leadership, I took a lot of really, really big steps, making sure I was the best captain I could be. Now, it’s time for more growth.”

Waiting for the opportunity was tough. The 22-year-old receiver had hoped to be drafted and be in camp with one of the league’s nine teams. Make no mistake, he had earned this opportunity. At St. FX, he was a 2022 AUS all-star, fourth in the conference in receiving with 24 catches for 379 yards and three touchdowns. After a standout performance at the CFL Invitational Combine in March, he got an invite to the national CFL Combine.
