Lowrie struggled at second base last season and was seen taking groundballs at first base Saturday.
On the first day after signing to return to the A’s, Jed Lowrie made his pitch to play second base this season in Oakland.
“I asked them to keep an open mind, because I’m moving well,” Lowrie said, according to the San Francisco Chronicle’s Matt Kawahara. Lowrie, who turns 38 next month, made 71 appearances at second base in 2021 and added 60 at designated hitter. His 139 total games in 2021 were a surprise given that injuries had kept him out the two prior seasons with the Mets, save for eight pinch-hit plate appearances in 2019.
He was spotted taking groundballs at first base Saturday, perhaps showing that the A’s plan to use the switch-hitter as an option where the rest of their roster bats left-handed. Lowrie has only played 11 games at first base in his career.“I had a really good year and you look at a lot of the stats used to predict performance, I had very good batted ball statistics,” Lowriereporters Sunday, per MLB.com’s Martín Gallegos.
