Patterson has worked closely with families who have lost loved ones to officer-involved shootings, specifically the family ofwho was fatally shot in April 2019 after he displayed a replica-style BB gun to APD officers. “We certainly understand that there’s a lot of community grief and anger and angst about what’s going on in this particular case,” Curley said. “We just hope that by people understanding our desire to release that video, it was in an effort to not hide anything.”
Utica’s most recent officer-involved shooting involving the 13-year-old is not all that different from that ofHandy’s case sparked much public outcry after a neighboringappeared to show events of the shooting playing out differently than the police’s account.
