A major exhibition in Fort Worth reveals varied influences on and expressions in Nevelson's art.
"The World Outside: Louise Nevelson at Midcentury" is a major exhibition at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth. Nevelson lived from 1899 to 1988.Born Leah Berliawsky near Kiev, then in Russian-occupied Ukraine, in 1905 Nevelson immigrated with her mother and siblings to Rockland, Maine. Her father, already settled there, collected and resold discarded clothes and metal scraps, eventually becoming a successful realtor.
The Carter exhibition and its accompanying catalog are laid out more thematically than chronologically. Still, early artistic explorations, giving little hint of the shadow boxes to come, are grouped early in the layout.Louise Nevelson's "Night Landscape" is an unsettling spread of blocky wooden forms, upright furniture spindles and hacked-off branches.Spare pen-and-ink drawings from the 1930s of hefty female torsos suggest influences from Picasso and Matisse.
, the eponymous stair supports counterpointed by carefully laid out patterns of wood shards. The interplay of forms linear, zigzagged and curved , smooth and sharp edged, incan keep eye and mind occupied for quite a while. Adjacent columns are clusters of apparently random strips and chunks of wood.A big break came in 1959-60 when a cluster of recent Nevelson creations, collectively titledshow at the Museum of Modern Art; companions included Frank Stella, Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns.
Try as I may, I don’t see a rain forest in three big slabs of boxes nestling balls, interspersed by two columns of curving strips. Would Nevelson have created wildly different works if lunar explorations hadn’t been much in the news at the time? The titles are about as illuminating as those Debussy applied as afterthoughts to his piano pieces. As D.H. Lawrence counseled, “Never trust the artist. Trust the tale.”The Carter show also includes some sidelines to the familiar boxed assemblages.
