Four games. Six sacks. Seven games. Seven sacks.
Lorenzo Mauldin IV just keeps dragging quarterbacks to the ground. After two seasons as a backup on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats’ defensive line, Mauldin IV has found early success as an Ottawa Redblack. Put your hand up if you remember Justin Capicciotti? He holds the Redblacks’ record for sacks in a season, with 12 . In that same 2015 season, Aston Whiteside came out of nowhere with seven sacks in five games, but was never the same after an injury. J.R. Tavai had eight sacks in 2019.
“He’s got a good work ethic,” said defensive line coach Mike Phair. “It’s not just him, it’s the whole group – the four guys working together. But, yes, he’s doing a really good job. You have to have the mentality where you don’t give up – you never know when the quarterback is going to come your way. That’s why you keep going.”
“He’s a guy I’d scouted when he was in the NFL,” said Redblacks GM Shawn Burke, a co-GM in Hamilton during Mauldin’s two seasons there. “He was an excellent special-teamer for us; as a third-round NFL pick, he didn’t mope. He embraced his role and wanted to be the best special teamer. I think he just needed the opportunity. We had some excellent defensive ends with Ja’Gared and Howsare that were durable. So never really got a chance.
“We have to stop the run first and foremost, then get them second and long,” said Mauldin. “We can give them a second and long and that’s when we get ready to pin our ears back and go.”Evans has been named a CFL Top Performer for Week 8, along with two other QBs — Zach Collaros and Nathan Rourke. The 24-year-old passed for 286 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 31 yards in Sunday’s 23-13 win in Toronto.
