Sunday marks a grim anniversary in Alaska: On that day 35 years ago, the Exxon Valdez oil tanker ran aground on Bligh Reef, spilling an estimated 11 million gallons of crude oil into the pristine waters of Prince William Sound.

The spill took a toll on the local economy as well, with impacts to fishing and tourism as well as the people who live there, according to Brooke Taylor with the Prince William Sound Regional Citizen’s Advisory Council. By all accounts, much has changed for the better since that day, including the formation of the citizen’s advisory council which was mandated by Congress after the spill and acts as a watchdog over the oil industry.
The spill prompted changes in federal and state law and spawned the federal Oil Pollution Act of 1990. Tankers are now required to have double hulls to minimize the possibility of a spill and must be escorted throughout the area by powerful tug boats, now built explicitly for the region, that also have the capacity to respond to spills.
