Long lost scripts of the very first adaption of J. R. R. Tolkien's LordOfTheRings have been discovered by Oxford academics. These scripts come from radio plays that were the only adaptations made during Tolkien's lifetime and notably include his input.
Manuscripts for the very first Lord of the Rings adaption in the 1950s, long thought lost, have been uncovered by scholars. The discovery comes as the newest Lord of the Rings adaption from Amazon approaches its release date. Amazon's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power TV series is set to release on September 2, 2022.
Filming has already wrapped for The Rings of Power season 1. The season, which was filmed in New Zealand, will consist of 8 episodes. While the series will feature the return of several familiar characters, such as Eldron and Galadriel, they have been recast as younger actors to align with the time period. The series has caught some attention for its massive budgets of over $1 billion, with season 1 alone costing $462 million.
"They said the scripts had been lost, but they have survived – the only professional dramatisation of The Lord of the Rings made during his [Tolkien’s] lifetime. It was not seen as important by the BBC then. It shows how reception of the book has changed – minor interest in 1955-56, now a global phenomenon, with Amazon reportedly investing more than $1bn in the latest series. Seventy years on, we would treat it like a sacred text.
This early dramatization of Tolkien's work was written by producer Terence Tiller. However, the manuscripts included a sheet in Tolkien's handwriting, showing how he rewrote certain scenes of the adaption. It is a bit surprising that Tolkien not only agreed to have his work dramatized so quickly after his books were published, but also sat down to work with the writers and producers to make it happen.
The discovery of the manuscripts highlights how differently Lord of the Rings adaptions were treated in the 1950s as opposed to today. Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings adaption spanned three massive films and Amazon's adaption costs a staggering $1 billion. However, in the 1950s the BBC didn't think the Lord of the Rings needed a third series and cut the amount of time of each episode.
