Long Lost Family host Nicky Cambell opens up about his recent bereavement and his own famly reunion with his birth mum - as he launches the 14th series of the ITV hit
Nicky Campbell and Davina McCall return for their 14th series of Long Lost Family, reuniting separated relatives in seven emotional episodes.
“In the mad world we live in, this show is a balm for the soul,” Nicky says. “I love meeting people and going into that inner sanctum of their lives. It’s a real privilege. It’s not a presenting job. It’s a mission that myself and Davina both have now – it transcends all that.” “But it’s absolutely right that people do it because it’s about the child having a right to know. I was really fortunate in that my parents were loving and completely understood.”
Despite tracking down his biological parents, Nicky has always considered his adoptive parents to be his real ones. “I hate it when people say to me, ‘Have you traced your real mum?’ Because my real mum is my mum who brought me up. I always try to politely correct people.” It isn’t the first time that a contributor has found their distant relatives after meeting Nicky in public. “There was a guy driving a taxi and he said to me, ‘I’ve got a brother somewhere.’ We got on to it – he went to the team and we found his brother. It’s great to have that connection with the public.”
Canine pal Maxwell helped Nicky cope when he suffered a mental breakdown in 2013. Nicky adds, “Then we went back and we had an absolute f***-off bottle of champagne that I bought to celebrate his life.”
