She was grabbed off the street, dragged to a riverbank and threatened with death.
A year after she was grabbed off the street, dragged her to a riverbank and threatened with death, “there isn’t one corner of my life that hasn’t been touched in some adverse way,” the 30-year-old London woman said from the lectern at the front of the London courtroom to Ontario Court Justice Stephen Darroch. She has taken a financial hit from taking too many days off from her job to deal with the trauma and paying out of pocket for medications to help her sleep.
“I have become physically afraid of men and terrified when I find myself alone with one unknown to me,” she said. The woman was walking home south on Richmond Street from a Richmond Row restaurant just after 11 p.m. Surveillance video collected by police from various businesses along the route showed the woman walking on one side of the street and Sewell walking on the other side a few steps behind.
Sewell grabbed the woman by the neck with both hands and pinned her to the ground. He wanted her wallet, but she said she had a purse that she had dropped during the struggle and there was no money in it. She tried to escape, but Sewell held her down and continued to choke her, the statement of facts said.Article content
The woman begged for her life and Sewell, holding onto her coat collar, said he could “tell from her eyes she was a good person” and would let her go, if she didn’t tell anyone. She put the handkerchief in his back pocket and he released her.Article content
