Although most had sensible footwear, the climbing community has been left shocked at the minority who are not only risking their own lives but who are also adding to the strain on over-stretched mountain rescue services.
Tourists have been warned by seasoned locals to wear appropriate clothing to climb Wales' highest mountain after a man was seen walking up Yr Wyddfa during snowy conditions in a pair of shorts.
This is seemingly a common occurrence on Scotland's highest mountain too, as someone recalled encountering a group of men on their way up Ben Nevis wearing leather office shoes. Rescue bids for people wearing trainers and other inappropriate shoes have increased in recent years. In 2021, Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team warned people to wear appropriate gear after spotting a group ascending the mountain wearing stilettos.
Top news stories today On Easter Friday, a climber grabbed a photo of thick snow at the top of Yr Wyddfa, if only to remind himself of the folly of others. On social media he wrote: “This was the top at 10am. people in trainers and shorts, it was freezing.” In exasperation, some climbers in Bannau Brycheiniog have taken it upon themselves to turn people back. It’s been attempted on Yr Wyddfa too.
A woman saw them circling. She said: “We went up today as far as we could. We had everything we needed. But we decided it was too dangerous to carry on along the edge where the snow path was.
