Locals have been reminiscing about the days when well-loved busker William 'Scotty' McLean entertained the crowds with his twin penny whistles on the streets of Glasgow.
For decades, William 'Scotty' McLean made Glasgow smile better with his wry patter and the tuneful sound of his twin penny whistles.
A legend in the eyes of many, the musical McLean, who lived in Garthamlock but hailed from the east end of the city, entertained locals on the streets and on the subway. Even the crowds queuing up outside the Apollo Theatre and Odeon cinema on Renfield Street were regularly treated to his tunes. He became so famous that he ended up appearing in civic advertising campaigns of the era celebrating Glasgow characters.
This week, images of Scotty appeared on the popular Blasts from the Glasgow Past group on Facebook, with locals coming forward to share their memories of the well-known street busker. One person even suggested that a mural be created in honour of the "legend".Chris Welsh said: "That's brought back a memory. Saw him often in the city centre. Talented guy."Cecilia Angela Buhler recalled: "I remember him outside the Odeon on Renfield Street.
Norma Morton commented: "Always played outside the cinema queues Part of Glasgow through and through."Earlier this year, Glasgow Live reported on the rediscovery of a piece of footage showing buskers playing on Glasgow's streets in 1984. Scotty McLean makes an appearance in the film, alongside Robert the Robot and two young musicians who would later go on to form the Soup Dragons.
