Monarch died Thursday at 96 after 70-year reign - Sault’s elected leaders, residents remember her as role model

Buckingham Palace said the Queen - head of state for the United Kingdom, Canada and several other Commonwealth nations - died peacefully at Balmoral Castle in Scotland surrounded by Royal Family members Thursday.Described in recent months as having mobility issues, she had almost completely withdrawn from official engagements, though she publicly appeared to enjoy some of her Platinum Jubilee events earlier this year.

“Her Majesty reigned honourably over Canada for more than 70 years. She oversaw sweeping positive changes and led our governments with formidable leadership, respect, and humility. Over these past 70 years of her reign, Canada and the world has seen her leadership mend bridges, improve relations, maintain and promote peace, and most of all she was a role model of politeness for many.

“It’s very sad and it’s going to be an adjustment period for everybody who’s been under her reign. It’s a very sad day for us,” said Helen Stewart, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 25 president. On that occasion, several Saultites shared positive sentiments about the Queen and the monarchy in general. Queen Elizabeth visited Sault Ste. Marie during a visit to Canada in 1959 as outlined earlier by SooToday.

As the years went by, the Queen's Christmas Message, along with her other speeches and appearances, were viewed in brilliant colour on big screen TVs, with the monarchy having its own YouTube channel.
