South Africa faces the resumption of load shedding, with Stage 3 power cuts implemented from 5pm on January 31, 2025. This unexpected return comes after a period of over 10 months without rolling blackouts, attributed to the success of Eskom's Generation Recovery Plan. However, recent breakdowns requiring extended repairs have depleted Eskom's emergency reserves, necessitating this temporary measure. The situation raises concerns about the long-term stability of the power grid.

South Africa ns were shocked to hear that Eskom has announced that load shedding is back after more than 10 months without it.

According to the media statement mentioned before, Eskom has experienced several breakdowns that require extended repair times over the past seven days. This has necessitated the use of all their emergency reserves. Consequently, Eskom must now replenish these. Eskom will monitor the status of their current emergency reserves, and load shedding over the weekend and could possibly increase the load shedding up to Stage 4.

Unsurprisingly, comments were rife on social media following the news that load shedding is back. Here’s what South Africans had to say on X:

Load-shedding fears rise as South Africa faces electricity supply crunchLoad-shedding fears rise as South Africa faces electricity supply crunchProject development company Cresco forecasts a potential return of stage 1 load-shedding in South Africa towards the end of January and beginning of February due to a projected imbalance between electricity supply and demand. Cresco points to increased demand during this period coupled with planned maintenance outages at Eskom's power stations as contributing factors. While Eskom has managed supply-demand challenges effectively so far using diesel-powered peaking stations and load curtailment agreements, Cresco warns of potential risks associated with aging power infrastructure and the reliance on intermittent renewable energy sources. Although load-shedding is not expected to reach the severity seen between 2021 and 2024, Cresco urges action to ensure Eskom can meet future demand.
