Prime Minister could be forced to pause her reshuffle for longer due to Royal mourning period
September 16, 2022 7:23 pmofficial mourning periodThe Prime Minister was forced to pause her vast reshuffle last week in the wake of Her Majesty’s passing and Liz Truss may be unable to resume her appointments for another seven days after the state funeral on Monday.
The continued interruption to political proceedings is because the Royal Family has a further seven days of private mourning and every ministerial appointment must be made officially by the monarch. Downing Street has been left scrambling to ascertain whether Charles III will sign off the list of new ministers, or if he will be forced to wait another week until it has a fully functioning government.
It comes after the Conservatives came under severe criticism for engaging in a near-two month leadership contest that left the Government paralysed by a lack of leadership during the continuing cost of living crisis.this week suggested that as many as 55 front-bench posts that were used by Boris Johnson are yet to be filled, although No 10 has disputed the exact figure, suggesting that it could be lower.
Asked when the posts will be filled, a No 10 spokeswoman said: “We will update on the next steps as soon as we can.”
