There are concerns about the high rate of accidents caused by livestock on the R617, between Merrivale and Boston, outside Howick. | WitnessKZN

According to a report that was tabled at uMngeni Municipality’s community service portfolio committee meeting on Tuesday, the R617 towards Mpophomeni had weekly accidents and most of them were caused by livestock. The road conditions and drivers’ behaviour also contributed to some of the accidents.

Councillor Hazel Lake said there were attempts to resolve the livestock problems on the R617 over the years, but it has never been successful. Livestock was said not to be only a problem on the R617 but on Mandela Highway in Mpophomeni as well. One of the councillors in Mpophomeni, Sthembiso Msibi, said livestock was also seen sleeping on the road in Mpophomeni at night.

Traffic and licensing manager, Xolani Nhlangulela, said they would engage with the Department of Transport to increase signage warning of livestock and stray animals on the R617. Nhlangulela said there were incidents where officers had to warn cattle owners about allowing their animals on the road. He said if they failed to keep their cattle off the road then their animals would be impounded.
