Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah are all out of contract Liverpool next summer and will be free to sign pre-contract agreements with overseas clubs in six months
The Reds had already confirmed that the outfield pair would leave the club at the end of their contracts this summer. And while the shot-stopper had been offered an extension, he is reportedly set to opt for a return to Real Betis on a free transfer instead.
Of course, the Reds wish to avoid such a scenario. Having now appointed Arne Slot as Jurgen Klopp’s successor and finalised a number of key changes behind the scenes, club bosses are keen to accelerate talks with the trio over extending their stays at Anfield. This summer would mark the last opportunity Liverpool would have at selling any of the trio for market value, given their expiring contract status. In six months’ time, on January 1, 2025, if their futures still remain unresolved, all three would be free to sign pre-contract agreements with overseas sides.
Is it better to lose three of your star players in mid-season for a knock- down fee, or at the end of the campaign for nothing? Of course, that existing expiry status also ensures increasing speculation and uncertainty continues. The clock is ticking as all three stars continue to edge ever closer to the exit door. If their status remains unchanged come January 1, exits will look increasingly likely.
