The hosts got off to a lively start when Miguel Almiron was slipped through on goal, but the forward was unable to fire past Alisson Becker in a one-on-one situation.

It got better for the Reds on 17 minutes when Mohamed Salah's first-time ball over the top found Cody Gakpo, who took one touch before firing into the back of the net. Newcastle still showed some fight after going down to ten men and they were unlucky not to have pulled one back on 40 minutes when Dan Burn nodded against the crossbar.
