Liverpool have stuck to their stance of keeping hold of Mohamed Salah this season - but was it the right choice?
The decision of the Reds to resist any overtures for the Egyptian from the Saudi Pro League ultimately led to Al-Ittihad not following up their initial bid of £150million.
Even with that particular bid being turned down while the transfer window was still technically open for the Reds, there was simply not enough time to source an adequate replacement. Any attempt to do so would have led to overpaying for a panic buy who would not be as influential as the peerless Egyptian at Anfield.
Perhaps, in time, there is more consideration to be given to any future offers for Salah but this window was simply not the time. Salah scored 30 goals once again last season and registered 16 assists. Despite being 31, he is showing no signs of slowing down, with his presence at Anfield the potential difference between qualifying for the Champions League and falling agonisingly short. Now, after the late attempt of Al-Ittihad to lure the Egyptian King away from Anfield, the focus on Merseyside must switch to extending Salah's terms beyond his current 2025 deal.
