Liverpool are once again proud owners of Melwood and Liverpool Women took a first look at their new home earlier this week
Liverpool’s return to Melwood represents more than just a change of location for Matt Beard’s team, but it’s a statement of intent from a club painfully familiar with the consequences of not keeping up with those around them.
Melwood had been Liverpool’s training base for more than 70 years before a new era began in 2020 when they completed the move to the AXA Training Centre in Kirkby. The base in West Derby was sold on to social housing developer Torus, but it was former Reds Robbie Fowler and Jamie Carragher who used the site for their academy.
The phrase “the power of one” greeted them as they entered the reception area, a hopeful sign of the commitment from the club to drive success in the same way they have for the men’s team for so long. The lyrics of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” adorn the walls of a newly refurbished dressing room fit for a top WSL team.
"You look at the managers that have worked in that office and for me to be in there and represent this fantastic football club at Melwood is great. They've worked incredibly hard to get it ready for us.
