“We may have lost the battle over the takeover but we will work night and day not to lose the war for the best education possible for our children,” she said. “I think teachers, along with parents and the community, have a lot of questions,” she said. “I think we all want to work in a professional environment where we have confidence that we can thrive.”
Additionally, Horn said, it’s important to keep assessing impacts from the takeover -- intended and otherwise. Research shows that setting rigorous expectations and leaning into diversity are both factors that contribute to academic success, she said.The Texas Education Agency, or TEA, is the state agency that oversees primary and secondary public education, tasked with providing leadership, guidance and support to more than 1,200 independent school districts in Texas.
McCullum said she chose to keep attending Wheatley even after moving away from the Fifth Ward community. The high school has a long tradition of greatness, she said, and the school has offered wonderful opportunities in the last four years. The senior recently earned a scholarship from the University of Texas at Austin.
The TEA’s move comes as Abbott, a Republican, is expending significant political capital on a list of education reforms. If he is successful, those reforms will be aHISD board members promise to continue fighting takeover efforts
