Service delivery protests have sprung up in various parts of South Africa ahead of national elections in May.

"I think it's a very volatile situation and we are monitoring it on a minute by minute basis," Golden Arrow spokesperson Bronwyn Dyke-Beyer told News24.

She said the company was consulting with law enforcement officials to determine when it would be safe to resume operations. "We've also got our own officials that are there and they are monitoring the situation," said Dyke-Beyer. Golden Arrow suspended its services inside the area as soon as protests flared up and the company says that currently, it is operating on the outskirts. "Obviously, we'd love to operate, but it is a balancing act because our first concern is the safety of our staff," said Dyke-Beyer.

No buses have been damaged in Thursday's protests and Dyke-Beyer said that Khayelitsha was an important component of the company services.
